AERIAL YOGA

At Shanti Yoga Center, we provide Unnata® Aerial yoga classes and training. In these classes, you'll relax and realign your body, center your mind, and uplift your spirit. The instructor guides you to experience physical release, refined strength, energetic flow, and awareness of breath and body. Supported by aerial silk, you'll embrace gravity, deepen your practice, and discover a new way of being in your body.

Unnata® Aerial Yoga was created by founder Michelle Dortignac, drawing from over 20 years of teaching yoga, meditation, and movement, as well as aerial arts performance. Some aerial classes refer to the material from the ceiling as a sling, silk, or hammock. At Shanti Yoga Center, we use "aerial silk."

Using aerial silk reveals subtle insights that can only be found from an aerial perspective, which can be applied to traditional floor yoga practice. Aerial yoga guides students into accessible inversions and supported backbends. This understanding can be used to achieve similar results in floor or mat yoga practice.

In our aerial classes, we focus on three main concepts from the Unnata® Aerial Yoga Method: release, realign, and rebuild. We start by relaxing the muscles and mind, then realign postures, and finally strengthen within this new alignment. This process promotes good posture habits and maintains spinal integrity while balancing mobility, stability, and strength. Strengthening before realignment can reinforce poor postural habits, and realigning before relaxing can cause injuries. Our aim is for students to develop the strength to support spinal elongation and joint mobility, beyond just "hanging" as a temporary practice.
